The building that is now the Gateway Center Building was originally built in 1919 after the demolition of three buildings (listed as stores) that occupied the parcel of land prior to 1919. The building is listed in 1920 as being used almost in its entirety for storage, except the first floor which was used for retail. There was an addition to the building in 1937 and a second addition to the south-west side of the building carried out in 1972. The original building footprint was 6000 square feet and was L-shaped. The rectangular 1972 addition brought the building’s footprint to over 9000 square feet almost covering the entire parcel of land. The land on which the building sits is about 9250 square feet.
The original portion of the building had a reinforced concrete structure and brick external walls while the 1972 addition had a full steel frame structure.
