METCO announced today that they will be joining the "CyArk 500 Challenge" which will focus on the digital preservation of 500 endangered cultural heritage sites from around the world over the next five years. METCO Services, Inc. will provide scanning services, project management, and standardize work flow procedures.
CyArk's stated mission involves utilizing the latest laser-scanning technology to collect the most accurate 3D models of Cultural Heritage Sites and store them safely in a publicly accessible archive. With the advent of increased population, urbanization, industrial development, climate change and armed conflicts, there is an increased sense of urgency to gather data while many sites are still intact.
CyArk has amassed a diverse group of heritage, university and private sector partners in this ambitious endeavor. With this assembly of professionals, an efficient and cost-effective methodology has been developed that will effectively gather, process and archive digital data for preservation and education.
